How to use a personal VPN if you live in Russia or connect from there: which location to choose for lower latency, which protocol suits your network, how to keep the connection stable on mobile internet, and how to pay for a subscription with a Russian card or via SBP.
This article is not legal advice. It describes settings that, in practice, help you get a fast and stable connection to your own server.
How to choose a location
A personal MeduzaVPN server is deployed in the location you chose when ordering. That choice determines latency: the shorter the distance between you and the server, the faster websites open and the smoother calls and video run.
For connections from Russia, the nearest European locations are usually the best choice — the Netherlands, Finland, Germany: latency is lower and speed is higher. A country overview is on the VPN for Russia page.
- more than 60 locations: Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Helsinki, London, Paris, Warsaw, Stockholm, Zurich, Istanbul, Almaty, Dubai, Tokyo, Singapore, New York and others.
- A nearby location — for everyday work, calls and video.
- A distant location — when you need a server in a specific country, for example while travelling or to work with colleagues.
How to choose a protocol for your network
Networks differ: home fibre, office Wi‑Fi and mobile LTE all behave differently, and a protocol that runs smoothly on one network may connect more slowly on another. That’s why all protocols run at the same time on a personal MeduzaVPN server, and switching between them takes a few seconds in the app.
| Protocol | What it’s good at | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| MeduzaVPN ULTRA | Our newest connection mode, selected by default in the apps; it restores the connection on its own and needs no setup. | The main choice for every network, including mobile. |
| MeduzaVPN | MeduzaVPN’s own protocol, proven and fast. | A dependable fallback if ULTRA struggles on a particular network. |
| VLESS / Xray | Encrypts traffic with TLS and is supported by many third-party clients. | Another fallback for home Wi‑Fi and computers. |
| WireGuard | The fastest of the classic protocols, with modern encryption. | Stable home internet where maximum speed matters. |
MeduzaVPN ULTRA
ULTRA is MeduzaVPN’s connection mode built for a stable, fast connection. It’s first in the protocol list and is selected by default for new connections, so you usually don’t need to change anything. If the connection drops, ULTRA restores it automatically.
VLESS
VLESS combined with Xray encrypts traffic with TLS and works well as a fallback. You can also use it in third-party clients if you prefer them to the MeduzaVPN app.
WireGuard
WireGuard is a fast, lightweight protocol with modern encryption. It performs well on stable home internet when maximum speed matters.
Shadowsocks
Shadowsocks is undemanding on resources and useful for older devices and routers.
The key point: you don’t need to guess in advance. Start with ULTRA, and if the connection is worse on some network, try MeduzaVPN or VLESS on the same server.
Stability on mobile networks
Mobile internet is less predictable than home internet: the phone moves between Wi‑Fi and LTE, and network load changes throughout the day. That’s why the same protocol can run smoothly at home and drop out now and then on the go.
What helps keep the connection stable on a phone: stay on ULTRA, which restores the connection on its own, test the connection on mobile data and on Wi‑Fi separately, and choose a nearby location. For more on what stability depends on, see the article on VPN connection stability.
Important: if the connection is unstable on mobile data, switch the protocol in the app first, and only then try another location. The server stays the same when you change the protocol.
Personal server or shared VPN
Mass-market VPN services put hundreds or thousands of users on a single server. The channel’s speed is split among everyone, and services like banks see one IP with thousands of accounts and trigger extra checks more often.
On the PERSONAL plan, MeduzaVPN deploys a separate server with its own IP address in the chosen location for every customer. Nobody else uses that address, the channel’s speed isn’t shared, and the IP’s reputation depends only on you. For more on what that means, see the article on what a VPN server is.
- All protocols on one server, switched right in the app.
- Split tunneling: some apps or websites connect directly, outside the VPN.
- A kill switch that stops traffic if the tunnel drops.
- Access can be shared with family — one server, several devices.
How to pay for a VPN from Russia
Paying through the App Store and Google Play from Russia is generally unavailable: the stores don’t accept Russian cards. That’s why MeduzaVPN accepts payment on its website, with the subscription linked to the same account you use to sign in to the app.
Available payment methods:
- SBP — payment by QR code or through a banking app;
- Russian bank cards, including Mir, and foreign cards;
- SberPay, T-Pay, Mir Pay, YooMoney;
- UnionPay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, PayPal;
- cryptocurrency.
Plans: 5.99 USD per month, 16.99 for three months, 31.99 for six months and 54.99 for a year. The amount is converted to rubles at the exchange rate at the time of payment — around 504 ₽ per month. All plans and payment methods are listed on the pricing and subscriptions page, and step-by-step instructions are in the article on how to pay for a VPN from Russia.
Refunds
A full refund may be requested, stating a reason, only within 15 days (15 × 24 hours) from ordering the service and being granted access to it. If access is granted after the order, the window starts when access is granted. Any trial period is included in these 15 days and does not extend them. The first payment after a trial, a renewal, a change of plan or a later payment for the same service does not start a new window. After this window, no refund is available under this policy for any subscription, including monthly and annual plans, or for any unused period. Purchases made in the App Store or Google Play apps are refunded by Apple or Google under their rules. Nothing in this section limits the rights that the Customer has under the mandatory consumer protection law applicable to the Customer.
Apps for every device
MeduzaVPN apps are available for iPhone and iPad, Android (through Google Play or as an APK from the website), macOS, Windows and Linux, as well as for Apple TV, Android TV and Fire TV. Ready-made configurations are available for routers running OpenWrt. One account works on all your devices with no limit on how many.
If Google Play isn’t available on your phone, install the APK from the website: it updates itself. If the Google Play version is already on your phone, uninstall it first: the APK has a different signature and won’t install over it. For a home network, it’s more convenient to set up the VPN on a router — that way every device is protected at once, including the TV and set-top box.
How to get started: 7 days without payment
- Install the app for your platform from the downloads page or from a store.
- Sign in with Apple, Google or email and password — the same account works on the website.
- Choose a nearby location; the server is deployed within a few minutes.
- Connect: the app selects ULTRA by default.
- Test the connection on mobile data and on Wi‑Fi separately and, if needed, choose a different protocol.
- If needed, turn on split tunneling for banking apps.
When you set up a subscription, nothing is charged for the first seven days — enough time to test it on all your networks. If the connection is unstable, contact support: we’ll check the state of your server and help you pick a protocol and location. You can compare the terms on the personal VPN pricing page.
FAQ
Which location should I choose if I connect from Russia?
Usually the nearest one: the Netherlands, Finland or Germany. The closer the server, the lower the latency and the higher the speed. If you need a different country, you can choose from more than 60 locations when you order.
Which protocol should I choose?
Start with MeduzaVPN ULTRA: the apps select it by default, and it restores the connection on its own. If ULTRA struggles on a particular network, switch to MeduzaVPN or VLESS in the app — the server stays the same, and all protocols run on it at once.
Why is the connection sometimes less stable on mobile data than at home?
A mobile network changes as you move: the phone switches between Wi‑Fi and LTE, and network load varies throughout the day. The same protocol can run smoothly at home and drop out now and then on the go. Test the connection on mobile data and on Wi‑Fi separately and, if needed, pick a different protocol for your phone.
Can I pay for MeduzaVPN with a Russian bank card?
Yes. The website accepts Russian cards, SBP, SberPay, T-Pay, Mir Pay and YooMoney, as well as foreign cards, PayPal and cryptocurrency. Payment on the website is linked to the same account you sign in with in the app.
What does “7 days without payment” mean?
When you set up a subscription, nothing is charged for the first seven days. You get your personal VPN right away, check the speed and connection on your own networks, and then decide whether to continue. If you cancel the subscription before that period ends, no charge is made.
How do I get a refund if the VPN isn’t right for me?
How is a personal server better than a shared VPN?
A personal server has its own IP that isn’t used by thousands of strangers. An address like this triggers fewer CAPTCHAs and extra checks from banks and services. On top of that, the server’s speed isn’t shared with other users.
Do I need a separate account for each device?
No. One account works on iPhone, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux, Apple TV, Android TV and a router, with no limit on the number of devices. Signing in with Apple, Google or email and password is the same in the app and on the website.
